Willi’s at The Royal Hotel | Perth, WA
Willi’s at the Royal contributes at the street level to the building’s renewal through a unique, world-class venue that’s respectful of its history and heritage.
Embracing the humble identity of the Milanese enoteca, the intent of Willi’s at the Royal was to bring a touch of old-world charm when you step off William Street. The brief entailed the food and wine to be the focus, creating a special place for a city worker’s lunch, an afternoon taster or late night amaro…
Stripping back the space allowed the re-organisation of the previous saloon bar style into something much more fluid and functional, with a reconnection to the under-utilised courtyard letting the new space really shine. The new steel portal and doorway draws you in from Raine Square, opening up dappled views to all three sides, creating a playful interaction with the street while encouraging more chance encounters.
Subtle details encourage you to sit a little longer, with the focus of the venue given back to the faces and the wine - the bottles and characters - like they’ve always been there. The wine is very much the hero here, with the display making the most of the tight storage space, while also getting in as many spots to lean, banter and imbibe.
Stone table tops, dark and warm timber furniture and joinery and feature lighting brings much character, texture and mood to the high ceiling space. The new shroud above the bartop reframes Willi’s personality and highlights the heroes – the bar and new kitchen front and centre.
