Wabi Sabi | Fremantle Biennale, 2019
It sits inconspicuously atop an existing concrete navigational footing; perceived as a short-term installation during the Fremantle Biennale in 2019.
Simplistic in appearance – folds of mild steel with inserts removed to allow a single occupant, permitting curated outwards views to south, east, west with full exposure to the sky; a small stool projects from the interior and encourages views from a different perspective.
Wabi-sabi reflects the undercurrent of the ocean explores its growth, change and decay. A nod to Fremantle’s history, the ocean, and human life; named aptly after the Japanese phrase wabi sabi.
The unit offers a curated experience of place that encourages the visitor to appreciate what they might not otherwise have noticed. It now stands as a permanent piece on the groyne, continuing to patina through the changing of time.
